Abstract

On February 14, 1848, the telegraph officially made its debut
in North Carolina as a message was transmitted from
Charleston, South Carolina, to Petersburg, Virginia, over the
newly strung wires of the Washington & New Orleans
Telegraph Company that ran through Fayetteville and Raleigh. “What
is it?” asked an advertisement for the telegraph company that appeared
in the January 1, 1848 issue of the Raleigh Register; it then proceeded
to supply the answer: “the incomprehensible triumph of Science, and
the Arcana of profound Philosophy."
